I'm always amazed at how much time we need to go over rules and proedures....this first week is always tough. We have started into the curriculum, but we are still working on our procedures. Our transitions are often slow between classes. By the end of week two we are better and in one month's time we will be a well oiled machine.
I love getting to know the students. Some are quiet, some are brave, some ask questions, others can't wait to get homework. 22 kids - all with different personalities - who I will spend more time with this year than my own nieces and nephews.
I try to explain the importance of listening...but is it that they are too excited to be back with their friends that makes listening difficult? I also have a bad habit of raising my voice to try to 'talk over' their talking....I must remember to lower my voice and they will lower their voices to hear what I have to say.
Gruber Bucks are soght after rewards. I have decided to not pass out candy as my 'caught you doing good'. I thought it was a healthy choice that we could all make.
Finally, it amazes me at how hungry the kids are during the day....we have snack time available to the class two times during the day. So far they can handle this new responsibility.

Sick Puppy
Joe got home today from school to find the house filled with a terrible stench. It seems as if Gus got a bit sick (vomit and poop) and it was all over him and the inside of his kennel. Joe did his best to get the mess out of the house (used a whole can of Febreeze!) and aired out the house the best he could.
After cleaning up the mess, Jeff and I, took Gus to the Animal ER. After a few tests....it seems as if Gus had a bacteria infection. It could have been worse. We thought he ate a sock or something like that. So, we have some pills to give him twice a day. We also got him a small fence - like cage for the garage. We thought it would be best to keep him there during the day and not in the house.
It was a long day - and a few hundred dollars, but we feel as if Gus will be all right (in a few days).

Girls Day
I had a blast with Jenna today. No school due to parent / teacher conferences. Jeff took the boys and Gus out hunting and are planning to be gone until Saturday afternoon.
Jenna and I started our day by picking up her friend, Anna, and heading to Michael's to find some new beads for jewelry making. We also went to the pet store and got some food for Gus. After dropping off our bags (the dog food was smelling up my new car)...we picked up Anna's brothers and had some lunch at Culvers. After lunch we dropped the boys back at home and began our crafting! The girls do so great with their beading. They each made a bracelet and a necklace, while I made the matching earrings. I also made a bracelet and earrings for my friend, Julie (Anna's mom) for her birthday!
After Anna left I took a short nap before Jenna and I headed to Village Point to do some shopping. We had a successful trip to Old Navy, Bath and Body Works, and Claire's. I picked Jenna up some supper at McDonalds and then we headed to Walgreens to "The Red Box" - where you can rent a movie for 24 hours for only $1.00 each. I had never rented that way before...but it sure was easy and such a deal! Tomorrow we'll return "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "The Back Up Plan".
Now...it's time to head to bed. Jenna and I have plans to do our nails and clean our rooms tomorrow!!!

Gus Gruber
A beautiful fall day
It's been a very long time since I posted. Since the start of summer we have had many ups and downs. Our trip to Alaska was amazing. We loved every minute of our 3 weeks there. Everyone got to do the 5 things on their list that they wanted. We fished, toured many museums, camped, made camp fires, read books, took pictures, ate great food, visited family, the kids and my mom went on a helicopter ride (Joe even flew it for about 5 minutes). There is so much to write about I'll try to do it over the winter months...as I'm scrapbooking the vacation!
I was able to get together with my sorority sisters this summer. Another wonderful weekend with the most amazing group of women! Jen hosted this year. We spent time on her amazing (huge) boat. The sun didn't stay out for long....but the company and conversations were heart warming.
August 11 was the start of school. Joe started High School. Jack started Middle School. Jenna joined me at my school as a 4th grader. I love having her at my school. We have a great time singing during our early morning commute!
August 11 was also the start of Margaret's sickness. Margaret fought through pneumonia and Listeria monocytogenes...only to get pneumonia again and not be able to fight this battle. We lost Jeff's mom on Sunday, September 12, 2010. We were all heart broken at the passing of our mom, mom in law, and grandma. We took off a week to be in Wisconsin. The service was beautiful with a surprise visit from some of my friends from Janesville.
So, we are dealing the best we can. We decided a great way to help with our grief was to get a dog. Last week we picked up Gus, a yellow lab from a farm about 1 1/2 hours from Omaha. He's an adorable puppy. He's being trained by Jeff and Jackson. He's good at retrieving.
So, that's where we are at now.......highs and lows......life can be rough, but we saw such amazing support from our family and friends! We are blessed to have so many great people in our lives.
